A 17-year-old resident of McKinney was taken into custody by federal agents on October 5, accused of orchestrating a plan to assassinate U.S. Representative Keith Self. The detention has cast a shadow over the congressional race in Texas’ third district, where the Republican lawmaker is currently seeking a third term. Campaign officials confirmed the details of the arrest to NBC 5, noting that the plot was serious enough to prompt an immediate review of the congressman’s security protocols as early voting proceeds across the state.

The congressman’s team learned of the detention on October 6 through the U.S. Capitol Police. Investigators indicated that the teen had been under surveillance by federal agents and was believed to be radicalized. Reports suggest the suspect was also planning a broader terrorist attack in the name of the Islamic State. The specific target for the assassination was identified as a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was set to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and several high-profile guests, making it a significant political and social gathering.

Rep. Self stated that his background in military service informed his reaction to the news. He described his response as calm, attributing this composure to his experience in combat zones. He noted that individuals without such experience might panic, but he understood the need to assess whether the suspect was a lone wolf. His wife, who spent 25 years as a military spouse, also took the threat seriously. She has supported him through multiple deployments, providing a shared context for the risks involved in public service.

The campaign manager reported that the team increased their situational awareness immediately after learning of the arrest. Self acknowledged that he had received threats in the past, but this was the first instance where the situation escalated to the level of an arrest. He emphasized that the seriousness of the incident was recognized by his staff, who understood the potential for a significant event. Despite the heightened security, Self attended the targeted event as planned. He judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the cook-off, reporting that the day went smoothly without incident.

Since the arrest, the congressman has continued his campaign activities. He has been out polling and greeting voters, maintaining his schedule of meetings. Self stated that the threat would not deter him from alerting the American public to what he views as a concerning political ideology. He plans to continue working to represent his constituents. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for additional information, but a response is still pending. The teen’s identity has not been released to the public while the investigation continues.

The alleged plot emerges during a period of intense political focus on religious law in Self’s district. In September, the congressman introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This stance aligns with broader debates in the region, particularly in McKinney, which is part of Self’s district.

In McKinney, local officials recently approved plans for the expansion of a mosque. The city council voted unanimously in August to approve the site plan, citing compliance with development rules. The decision followed hours of contentious public comment and was subsequently followed by an effort to recall several council members. This local controversy has added another layer of complexity to the political environment surrounding the assassination plot.

Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, also addressed the incident. He condemned the alleged plot in a social media post, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. The candidate’s response highlights the bipartisan attention the case has received, even as the primary focus remains on the safety of the incumbent. The investigation remains active, with federal agencies monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of the congressman and his team.
