OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of closing a $30 billion private funding round that values the company at $1.25 trillion. This move signals a strategic preference for private capital over an immediate public market debut, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Coatue Management and investors from the United Arab Emirates are leading this negotiation. The terms are currently in flux, with both CNBC and Bloomberg reporting that figures could shift as final agreements are hammered out. The UAE portion of the deal may include a separate arrangement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI’s infrastructure.
If the transaction finalizes at the reported figures, OpenAI would claim the title of the most valuable private company in history. This valuation would also establish a significantly higher hurdle for its upcoming Initial Public Offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a March funding round that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion on a post-money basis.
The timing of this raise is critical for the broader AI landscape. A valuation exceeding $1 trillion would raise the bar for other major players preparing for public markets. Anthropic, which is widely expected to launch its IPO soon, is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut.
Anthropic recently raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, a round many viewed as its final major private financing before going public. The company also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. With rumors suggesting its S-1 filing could appear at any moment, the valuation dynamics set by OpenAI could directly influence how investors price Anthropic’s entry into the public markets.
OpenAI has declined to comment on the reports. The discrepancy in reported valuations, with Bloomberg previously citing a $1.4 trillion figure, underscores that the terms are still being actively negotiated. For now, the focus remains on whether the AI lab will complete this mega-round to bolster its balance sheet before testing public investor appetite.
